Geocaching Tip of the Day #36

Are you sure about what is in that ammo can?

When you're out caching with kids, an adult should always open the cache container first.

While it is unlikely that it is actually booby-trapped, you may find broken items, hooks, creepy crawlers or other hazards waiting.

YOU take the first look.

  1. That's a great point. We've never found anything too bizarre, but we have cached in stinging nettle, poison ivy, etc. One cacher in our area reported hearing growling when he approached a cache. Needless to say, that was a DNF for the day.

  2. We did find a cache once with an urn containing the remains of a family pet. Unfortunately, we past the urn around a bit, to different kids, before we figured out what exactly it was, and before we could collectively say "Ewwww!".
